Trump Pauses US Operation to Guide Ships Through Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump has announced a temporary pause to “Project Freedom,” the American military operation created to guide stranded vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. The decision came amid reports of diplomatic progress between the United States and Iran following weeks of escalating regional tensions.

What Is Project Freedom?

Project Freedom was launched to help commercial ships safely navigate the Strait of Hormuz after Iran effectively restricted access to the vital waterway during the recent US-Iran conflict. The route is one of the world’s most important energy corridors, carrying nearly 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. The operation aimed to restore international shipping and stabilize global energy markets.

Trump Says Operation Paused by ‘Mutual Agreement’

In a social media statement, Trump said the mission would be paused for a “short period of time” because “great progress” had been made toward reaching a new agreement with Iran. Trump also stated that the decision came following discussions involving Pakistan, which reportedly acted as an intermediary between Washington and Tehran. However, Trump clarified that the US blockade on Iranian ports would remain active despite the operational pause.

Iran Claims Victory After US Decision

Iranian state media portrayed the pause as a political victory, claiming the United States had failed to fully reopen the strategic shipping route. Iranian officials argued that continued resistance in the region forced Washington to reconsider its military strategy. Mohammad Ghalibaf warned that tensions could continue if pressure on Iran remains in place.

US Officials Previously Defended the Mission

Earlier on Tuesday, senior US officials strongly defended Project Freedom. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US preferred diplomacy but remained prepared to protect shipping routes. Meanwhile, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth described the mission as essential for maintaining freedom of navigation and global trade. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Dan Caine also confirmed that the ceasefire with Iran remained fragile.

New Attacks Raise Security Concerns

Despite diplomatic efforts, tensions in the Gulf region continued to rise.

According to maritime reports:

  • A cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an unknown projectile
  • The UAE reported missile and drone threats for a second consecutive day
  • Iran denied launching attacks against the UAE
  • Commercial ships continued reporting security incidents in the region

Shipping companies and insurers remain cautious about fully resuming operations through the strait.

Operation Epic Fury and the Iran Conflict

The wider conflict began when the US and Israel launched Operation Epic Fury in February. Iran later responded by disrupting shipping activity in the Strait of Hormuz and launching attacks targeting regional interests. Although a ceasefire was announced in April, military tensions and economic pressure have continued.

Global Markets Watching Closely

The temporary pause in Project Freedom has created uncertainty for global markets.

Energy analysts warn that prolonged instability in the Strait of Hormuz could lead to:

  • Higher global oil prices
  • Increased shipping costs
  • Supply chain disruptions
  • Rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East

The United States is reportedly continuing diplomatic discussions with both Japan and China regarding the future of the waterway.
